  • Outlining the key commitments made in the 2017 Clean Growth Strategy including moving towards widescale use of low carbon efficiency energy 
  • Understanding the role of central and local government in reaching the legislative target of net-zero emissions by 2050, such as through halving the energy usage of new public sector buildings by 2030
  • Discussing the potential funding available for the public sector such as the Rural Community  Energy Fund (RCEF), which is a £10 million programme aimed at supporting rural communities in England to create renewable energy projects  
  • Establishing Local Energy Hubs to provide practical support to Local Authorities and LEPs to help them undertake the early stages of local and community energy projects
  • Announcing £30 million of funding in April 2019 as part of The Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, which will be allocated by UKRI to organisations developing smart local energy systems through new technologies, cheaper renewables, energy storage and more
  • Highlighting how the current surge in support for environmental issues within society can help local authorities to gain public buy-in for low carbon growth
